Five Days…
JAMIE was hunched over his laptop; a frown line creased his brow in concentration. Scroll, click… next. The line deepened at another dead end and he hit the back button several times. With a small frustrated growl, Jamie sat back in the chair and stared at the screen. “You will not beat me,” he muttered and leaned forward again to try a new link.
“Do you plan on doing any work today?” John grumbled when he entered the store’s kitchen.
Jamie glanced up, still lost in his thoughts, and said, “I’ll be out in a minute; I just need to do this, okay?”
John was rarely interested in Jamie’s flights of fancy, but there was a tone in his voice that John hadn’t heard before that intrigued him. “So what is it you’re doing that needs to be done right now?”
The lid of the laptop was not-so-subtly shut when John moved closer and Jamie shook his head. “It’s a Christmas present and I don’t want anyone to see yet, because I’m not sure if I can get it.”
“Now I’m worried,” John said. “You better not be buying something that would make your mother blush.”
Jamie grinned at the implication and stated, “Do you really think anything would make my mother blush?”
“Knowing Maggie, I doubt it.” John eyed the closed laptop and said, “Anyway, it looks like you’re done shopping, so how about you get out to the store and sort the pile of Christmas pick-ups?”
“Yeah, well, you know talking about Mum has made me think I should give her a call.”
Before John had a chance to say anything, Jamie had his cell phone in his hand and asked while listening to the steady rings, “Any message for her?”
“Give her my love and tell her that her son is a lazy little….”
Jamie held up his hand to stop John midsentence and said into his phone, “Hi, Mum, it’s Jamie. I’m in Margins and was talking to John and had the urge to call.”
John rolled his eyes and walked back out to the counter.
Jamie waited a second then said, “I tried that site, but no luck.”
“Are you sure you can’t ask him for any more details?” Maggie asked sleepily, because once again her gorgeous son seemed to have forgotten she was no longer in the adjacent suburb and their time zones were half a world apart.
“No chance, Mum, he’s not too good right now.”
“And how are you doing, sweetheart? You know I almost suggested you fly over here and spend Christmas with your old mum, but thought you might appreciate your freedom this year. Are you going to spend Christmas with John and David?”
“Yep,” Jamie answered, trying to hide just how much he missed his mum. “We’re going to help at the shelter Christmas Eve….”
“Will you see your young man?” Maggie quickly interrupted and Jamie was sure he could hear her smiling.
“He’s not my young man, Mum, but I’m working on it.”
Maggie laughed down the phone line, knowing that it would take a very strange or very straight man to resist her son’s charms.
